E-commerce customer in Asia spared the brunt of a massive DDoS attack with Edgio’s Stonefish DDoS mitigation system

Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks have proliferated at an exponential rate over the years – with more than 9.75 million separate attacks carried out in 2021 alone.

These threats impose a heavy toll on enterprises far beyond the financial cost of ransomware – loss of revenue during downtime, reputation damage, legal repercussions from security negligence, and potential exposure to larger cyberthreats.

Against this backdrop, companies are ramping up their defenses against malicious actors. However, application security is a problem many businesses are having difficulty addressing or even understanding. Edgio recently prevented one of the largest recorded DDoS attacks measuring ~176 million packets per second (Mpps) which targeted a multinational e-commerce client based in Asia. Despite the massive size of this attack, it was a non-event for the client, which saw no impact as Edgio’s network absorbed 100% of the attack traffic.
