APAC has some of the best and worst online experiences in 2020; global increase in hoaxes, fraud, scams, discrimination and hate speech.

For five years now, Microsoft has celebrated Safer Internet Day by launching results of its annual digital civility research.

It has also unveiled results of its study Civility, Safety, and Interactions Online – 2020 along with findings from its latest 2020 Digital Civility Index (DCI).

The study found that APAC performed better in online civility in 2020 with a score of 66, compared with the previous year’s score of 68 (a high DCI score is indicative of more negative online experiences).

APAC markets reported diverse findings across markets; Singapore and Taiwan sit among the top five globally with the most favorable DCI scores, taking fourth and fifth spots respectively. Vietnam saw the best improvement in the region, while Indonesia ranked 29 out of the 32 geographies and Malaysia reported its least favorable DCI over five years.

Teenagers were found to be more civil than adults, driving an improvement in global online civility.
