5G-Advanced Takes Off, Opening a New Chapter for 5G Globally

During this year’s World Telecommunication Day, the topic of 5G evolution attracted many operators’ attention and discussion. China Telecom has launched the Super TimeFreq Folding solution for 5G-Advanced. This new solution integrates large uplink bandwidth, low latency, high reliability, and ultra-large capacity into a single network, better enabling operators to support core industrial production with high performance 5G networks.

5G Evolves to 5G-Advanced to Continue Benefiting Various Industries

5G is quickly finding itself becoming an important enabler for the Internet of Things (IoT), manufacturing, positioning, and many other applications, helping increase production efficiency. Joe Barrett, President of the GSA, believes that “many fields will benefit from the improved positioning accuracy of 5G-Advanced, particularly in terms of reducing the costs of deploying Mobile IoT.” He noted that both the members of GSA and all major vendors will continue to promote the standardization of 5G-Advanced and support its development.

The GSMA shares a very positive outlook for the new use cases of 5G-Advanced. Henry Calvert, GSMA’s Senior Director of Group Technology, said that the world will soon see 5G-Advanced unveil new use cases for both consumers and industry markets. He sees XR becoming one of the most exciting new experiences that 5G-Advanced will bring to consumers. From virtual reality (VR) to augmented reality (AR), this new technology will enable interactive digital worlds to be constructed on top of the physical world. The potential of XR goes far beyond consumer entertainment. Various industries are exploring XR to discover new ways of working.

The GSMA is currently working to set up a 5G Advanced community, with the aim of bringing stakeholders together from all parts of the industry to help collaborate in defining the new technology and the use cases it will enable in future. “We are about scalable adoption. We want to unleash the connectivity of the new standards commercially. And that’s really about understanding the use cases and the business case for the new technology.”

Global Efforts from Operators Promote the Evolution of 5G

Undoubtedly, telecom operators are the main force on the road to 5G-Advanced. Etisalat UAE, a leading 5G operator in the Middle East, puts a lot of stock on 5G’s evolution. According to its CTIO, Khalid Murshed, it sees exploring 5G’s evolution as a major component for handling the growing scales, complexity, and technical challenges that have come along with 5G’s increasing importance. Based on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) it signed at the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Zain will focus on optimizing its network architecture to ensure the 5G capabilities required to implement uplink centric broadband communication (UCBC), real-time broadband communication (RTBC), and harmonized communications and sensing (HCS).

Qingdao Port becomes the world’s first hydrogen-powered and 5G intelligent port

The port is also Asia’s first fully automated container terminal

QINGDAO, China, June 23, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — During the 2022 Qingdao Multinationals Summit, the press office of Shandong Provincial People’s Government invited journalists to tour the Shandong Port Group’s automated container terminal at Qingdao Port, to learn about its smart and green operation and intelligent overhead container delivery system.

As the traffic volume continues to increase, the port’s carrying capacity limitations has become a bottleneck that limits further development. It quickly became evident that deploying a 3D intelligent, green and low-carbon transportation system is the way of the future.

Shandong Port Group senior expert Zhang Liangang and Qingdao New Qianwan Container Terminal general manager Li Yongcui took turns in explaining that Qingdao Port is now one of the world’s leading automated container terminals equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, a high degree of automation and high loading and offloading efficiency. It is also the first fully automated container terminal in Asia. The port has achieved productivity of 36.2 containers per ship per hour on average, peaking at 52.76 containers per hour, a production efficiency that is 50% higher than other ports with similar automated terminals. As one of the world’s largest automated terminals, Qingdao Port can accommodate 24,000TEU container ships with an annual throughput of 5.2 million TEUs.

On June 30, 2021, the world’s first intelligent overhead container delivery system (in a pilot phase) was put into operation at the automated terminal. The system was co-developed by a team of Qingdao Port engineers working under Mr. Zhang and the R&D team at CRRC Yangtze, with the goal of integrating the leading suspension transport technologies into the port’s operations to resolve that most difficult “last mile”, so as to maximize efficiencies when it comes to delivering containers between the terminal, ships, transfer stations and stockyards, and meet the requirements for low cost, short loading/unloading cycles, greater efficiency, full automation, higher safety and zero emissions.

With a commitment to being an environmentally-friendly and low-carbon hub, Qingdao Port, the world’s first “hydrogen + 5G” smart ecological terminal, has pioneered the hydrogen-powered crane technology and system by developing a hydrogen energy-driven solution for the fueling of equipment needed for the operation of a large port. The system reduces carbon emissions by some 3.5kg and sulfur dioxide emissions by 0.11kg per TEU. Calculated on the basis of an annual capacity of 3 million TEUs, 21,000 tons of carbon dioxide and 640 tons of sulfur dioxide emissions are estimated to be cut annually.

Huawei and China Telecom Launch Innovative 5.5G Super TimeFreq Folding

BEIJING, June 14, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Huawei and China Telecom jointly held a release conference to launch Super TimeFreq Folding, an innovative 5G-Advanced technology, and demonstrate related lab test results. Through continuous innovation, 5G industry applications, such as machine motion control, multi-machine collaboration, and machine vision AI inspection, have become increasingly essential in core production processes, raising extremely high requirements on latency, reliability, and uplink bandwidth. Take latency as an example. A latency of or lower than 1 ms, 4 ms, and 10 ms is required in about 15%, 35%, and 30% of industrial control protocols, respectively. Huawei Announces New Inventions That Will Revolutionize AI, 5G, and User Experience

Company discloses progress in IP, innovation at themed event

SHENZHEN, China, June 8, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Huawei announced a batch of key inventions as part of its biennial “Top Ten Inventions” Awards at the “Broadening the Innovation Landscape 2022” forum held at its Shenzhen headquarters.

The award is designed to recognize inventions that could create new series of products, become important commercial features of existing products, or that generate considerable value for the company and the industry.

The awarded inventions range from an adder neural network that significantly reduces power consumption and circuit area to a game-changing “optical iris” that provides a unique identifier for optical fibers. It is designed to help carriers manage their network resources, cutting time and costs associated with broadband deployment.

The announcement came in the context of intellectual property rights, the protection and sharing of which Huawei believes is critical to the tech ecosystem.

“Protecting IP is key to protecting innovation,” said Huawei’s Chief Legal Officer, Song Liuping. “We are eager to license our patents and technologies to share our innovations with the world. This will help broaden the innovation landscape, drive our industry forward, and advance technology for everyone,” he added.

“Huawei is constantly changing itself, and constantly showcasing to the world the value of IP from China,” said Tian Lipu, President of the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property’s China Chapter.

By the end of 2021, Huawei held more than 110,000 active patents across over 45,000 patent families. It has more granted patents than any other Chinese company, has filed the most patent applications with the EU Patent Office, and ranked fifth in terms of new patents granted in the United States. For five straight years, Huawei has ranked No. 1 worldwide in terms of Patent Cooperation Treaty applications.

Alan Fan, Head of Huawei’s IPR Department, said the value of Huawei patents has seen wide recognition in the industry, especially in mainstream standards such as cellular technology, Wi-Fi, and audio/video codecs.

“In the past five years, more than two billion smartphones have been licensed to Huawei’s 4G/5G patents. And for cars, about eight million connected vehicles licensed to Huawei patents are being delivered to the consumers every year,” Fan said.

Huawei is also working actively with patent license administration companies in offering “one-stop” licenses for mainstream standards.

“Over 260 companies—accounting for one billion devices—have obtained Huawei’s HEVC patent licenses through a patent pool,” Fan said. He added that the company is in discussions to establish a new patent pool to give the industry “quick access” to Huawei’s patents for Wi-Fi devices worldwide.

Huawei is also discussing joint licensing programs for 5G patents with licensing experts and other leading industry patentees.

Liu Hua, Director of World Intellectual Property Organization Office in China, praised Huawei’s sustained focus on innovation, saying: “We look forward to seeing Huawei continue to take part in high-level global competition with innovation at its core.”

For Manuel Desantes, former Vice President of European Patent Office, given the vast number of changes in the world these days, what matters most is no longer the number of registered patents or inventions. “The IP system should assure that the creations that merit protection are those that bring actual value,” he said.

This marked the third innovation and IP-themed event Huawei has hosted on its innovation practices. Every year, Huawei invests over 10% of its sales revenue into R&D.

In terms of R&D expenditure, Huawei ranked second in the 2021 EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard. In 2021, the company increased its R&D investment to CNY142.7 billion, representing 22.4% of our total revenue. Over the past decade, Huawei’s total R&D investment surpassed CNY845 billion.
